"And with the first pick of the 2015 NFL Draft..." These words are iconic in our culture. There is a lot of stock in the implications of a draft pick. When a person gets drafted by an NFL team, that person has a set of gifts, qualities, skills - assets that deem them worthy of playing at the highest level in professional sports.
The players bring something to the table - their talent. They get something in return (cha-ching). But I tend to look at all of the hoopla a bit differently. I'm reminded that we are all involved in a draft, of sorts. But in this draft, we are the people on the blocks with nothing to offer. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Well, except sin. Lots of it. Loads of it. Dump truck full of it.
You see, the Bible says, “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” What an amazing thing! Even in our lowest and worst, when we didn’t have anything to “offer” or “make the team better” He sacrificed for us. We had no abilities other than to get into sin (frequently). We had nothing to bring to the table. And our counter-offers were laughable. And yet, He did the unthinkable. He chose us. He selected us in the first round as the first pick of His draft.
If you were the only person on the earth, He would have both sacrificed for and selected YOU. It’s a humbling and exhilarating thought. In addition, He takes us just as we are and cleans us up from the inside out. He does this by giving us HIS SPIRIT to live inside of us. This is not rehabilitation. This is TRANSFORMATION!
So, in the chaos of the next few days, remember and be grateful for the ONE who selected YOU for HIS TEAM.
